President Donald Trump says the US will retaliate after two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed in Syria.
It happened near Palmyra in the central Homs region.
Syrian security forces and US troops came under fire during a joint patrol.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says “partner forces” killed the assailant.
Syria’s interior ministry says he had no rank within government security forces.
An investigation is underway to determine whether the attacker was linked to ISIL.
But Donald Trump says he believes the group is responsible.
