The Syrian government is preparing to enter Kurdish-controlled areas in the northeast following an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate its fighters into the army.
Under the deal, the SDF will remain in place whilst the state assumes control of territory, borders and detention facilities holding ISIL fighters and their families.
Residents express mixed feelings – some hope for peace and stability, whilst Kurds fear what the government’s presence will mean.
Thousands of ISIL (ISIS) detainees remain in Syrian prisons, with the US transferring only a few hundred to Iraq so far.
