Panel: Why are allies hesitating on Trump’s Strait of Hormuz effort?

Foreign ministers from EU countries discussed options to secure the Strait of Hormuz but decided against expanding their naval operations in the region. It comes after President Donald Trump has appealed for European allies to support the US’s efforts to secure the vital waterway after Iran effectively closed it.

“Europe has no interest in an open-ended war,” Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat, told journalists in Brussels on Monday evening after the meeting. She noted that the EU’s Red Sea naval force, Operation Aspides, already “plays a key role in safeguarding the freedom of navigation.”
