Food fraud costs the world up to $40bn annually and can have serious health consequences for consumers. As the FT’s Madeleine Speed explains, food prices have been driven up by the war in Ukraine and global warming, and as they’ve risen, so has the temptation for criminals to sell fake or contaminated produce. High-tech tracking and testing can help fight food fraud, but the nature of the business means it isn’t easy.
